You might be wondering why Trinity Baptist does not have special worship services for young adults and other specific programming that “draw” young adults together. Maybe you know of other churches that offer this and it seems to draw young adults in large numbers.
I get it. It’s tempting, even for me. But beyond just my lack of time to lead a programmatic ministry, research continues to bear that age specific programmatic ministry isn’t what young adults typically need. Ministry with young adults rarely follows traditional youth ministry approaches. The needs of young adults are not the same as teenagers or even college students.
Young adults rarely need games. They need safe spaces to share their honest thoughts, ask hard questions, and know they make a difference.
One young adult in FYI’s research shared, “Making God a part of everything is easily said from the pulpit, but practicing to follow Jesus feels possible when you sit with other Christians and process it out loud at someone’s house with good food and no pressure.”
Process out loud.
Good food.
No pressure.
This young adult reflection is encouraging. We don’t have to have special programming. We just need a willingness to share a table with a good conversation. Ministry with young adults is simply meeting them where they need us the most!
Young adults who are interested in following Jesus need help processing out loud with no pressure and no judgment. They thrive when faith communities take Jesus seriously and foster a warm community across generations.
This means that Trinity Baptist has hundreds of young adult ministry leaders. You are a part of our young adult ministry because you have the ability to share a meal together with young adults. You have the opportunity to share hospitality with others. You can offer a safe space with no pressure or judgment.
Welcome to ministry with young adults!
