Sue Newton’s lifelong journey with music began at age eight in Oxford, North Carolina, when she first sat down at the piano. By 14, she was already playing for a gospel quartet, choir, and worship services at Delrayno Baptist Church. Her passion for the keys led her to Meredith College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 1977.
Throughout her career and retirement, Sue remained deeply dedicated to church music. She returned to Delrayno Baptist as pianist for 14 years, and later joined Greystone Baptist in 2004. There, she began accompanying the choir under the direction of composer Pepper Choplin, an opportunity that took Sue to prestigious stages including Meymandi Concert Hall, Lincoln Center, three appearances at Carnegie Hall, and a beautiful performance
tour through Italy in 2024. Since joining Trinity Baptist Church in 2019, Sue has joyfully served as the accompanist for both the Prime Timers and the Young Musicians choir. Her versatile gifts have also been shared across the community, including a year as interim pianist at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian and her most recent role at St. Mark’s United Methodist. Today, Sue is absolutely thrilled to step into her new role as church pianist at Trinity Baptist Church, bringing her lifelong love for music and faith to the heart of the music ministry team.
