For 20 years, the North Hills 5K at Trinity Baptist Church has brought people together for fitness, fellowship, service, and a greater purpose. As the final NH5K comes to a close in 2026, we have much to celebrate and an exciting new opportunity ahead.
Where It All Began
The North Hills 5K began in 2005 when Christie Fry and Rev. Spencer Good, in conjunction with Dr. Jeff Roberts, looked for a way to increase awareness of Trinity Baptist Church within our growing community.
Over time, the event became more than an opportunity to welcome our neighbors to Trinity’s campus. As the race began generating proceeds, the decision was made to use those funds to support children in our community through Backpack Buddies.
For many years, the NH5K supported Backpack Buddies through North Raleigh Ministries. As changes occurred at NRM, that support continued through Inter-Faith Food Shuttle through 2024.
Responding to a New Need
Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, the NH5K Team chose a new beneficiary for 2025: Baptists on Mission.
The partnership reflected Trinity’s significant involvement in serving communities throughout Western North Carolina and allowed the race to support recovery efforts beyond our immediate community.
As the NH5K approached its 20th year, however, the team also began considering what the future of the event could look like.
During that time, Note in the Pocket reached out about a potential partnership. Their mission of providing clothing to children and families with dignity and love offered a natural connection to the heart behind the NH5K throughout its history.
The decision was ultimately made for 2026 to be the final year of the North Hills 5K, completing an incredible 20-year run.
A New Chapter Begins in 2027
The end of the NH5K does not mean the end of Trinity’s involvement with a community 5K.
On Saturday, September 18, 2027, Trinity Baptist Church will partner with Note in the Pocket for the 5K Rundie, continuing to welcome our neighbors to Trinity’s campus while supporting children in our community with dignity and love.
This new partnership gives Trinity members another opportunity to live out our call to Take the Next Step. We can Step Out by participating alongside our community and Step Forward by serving and helping make the event possible.
Twenty years of the North Hills 5K have created a legacy worth celebrating. Now, we look forward to seeing where the next step takes us.
