Before Trinity Baptist Church had a sanctuary, classrooms, a fellowship hall or a recreation center, there was a growing community along Six Forks Road and a need for a church to serve it.
In 1954, the Missions Committee of the Raleigh Baptist Association, chaired by Rev. Lee Pridgen, recognized that new residential developments were bringing more families into the area north of Raleigh. As the community grew, the committee saw the need for a Baptist church that could minister to the people moving into this part of the city.
The committee voted to begin the work of securing a site and helping organize a church.
It was a beginning rooted not in a building, but in a community. New homes were appearing. New neighbors were arriving. And before a congregation had formally gathered, there was already a desire to establish a place of worship, fellowship and service on Six Forks Road.
That desire soon became more concrete. On Sunday afternoon, September 11, 1955, twenty people gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Reid Hill on Bellevue Road for the first planning meeting to organize a new Baptist church. Similar meetings continued each Sunday afternoon through November 13, as questions were answered and plans began to take shape.
At the same time, a survey was conducted to determine the number of prospects in the surrounding community. The work was careful and practical: identify the need, gather people together and find a place where a new church might grow.
After an initial property arrangement proved unsuccessful, the Raleigh Baptist Association purchased land on Six Forks Road. The property included a large duplex house that had once served as Oak Grove School. Additional land was acquired, and the site would become the home of Trinity Baptist Church.
The story of Trinity begins in a Raleigh community that was changing and growing. It begins with leaders who noticed the need around them and with families willing to gather, pray and plan for what might come next.
Seventy years later, Trinity remains on Six Forks Road, still called to worship God, serve neighbors and welcome people into the life of the church. The community has changed greatly since those first meetings, but the location that once represented a new beginning continues to be a place of ministry today.
